Andrew G. Paton has practised extensively in both common law and civil law jurisdictions. He was first admitted to practise in New South Wales, Australia, and subsequently in England and Wales and in Italy, where he is one of only several common lawyers to have gained full admission to practise before the Italian courts. In his 20 years of practise in Italy, Andrew was senior associate and partner of CMS-Adonnino Ascoli & Cavasola Scamoni and, subsequently, of counsel in the Rome office of Allen & Overy. In September 2005, he co-founded Barenghi & Paton, a boutique law firm specialising in corporate and commercial law, M&A, private international law and dispute resolution in these fields.
He has assisted major multinationals in joint ventures, M&A, spinoffs, public procurement, financing, outsourcing, licensing and distribution, gaining substantial experience in the resolution of problems faced by foreign corporations in the development and strengthening of their Italian operations. He has led teams of lawyers on major projects in the fields of information technology, tobacco, pharmaceutical, tourism and manufacturing. He has also acted as counsel in large international arbitrations under the rules of the ICC and, over the past 5 years, has been appointed arbitrator on panels and as sole arbitrator in several arbitrations.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, member of the London Court of International Arbitration and of the International Bar Association, and a mediator with the ADR Center, Rome, London. He has published numerous contributions in the fields of M&A, distribution agreements, international and domestic arbitration, private international law and on the trust in Italy.
