International
Arbitration

WHO WE ASSIST

We advise Italian and international clients in arbitration proceedings and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) procedures, whether seated in Italy or abroad.

Our experience spans disputes across a broad range of sectors, including international trade, construction and engineering, corporate law, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), intellectual property, real estate, telecommunications, energy, oil & gas, pharma, luxury and investment arbitration.

WHAT WE DO

The International Arbitration and ADR team comprises a dedicated group of partners and associates and is recognised as one of the most highly qualified in Italy, with consolidated experience in high-value and highly complex domestic and international arbitration proceedings, both ad hoc and administered.

We assist clients at every stage of arbitration proceedings – from the initial strategic assessment and selection of the most appropriate dispute resolution mechanism, through to post-award activities, including recognition and enforcement procedures in Italy and abroad.

We regularly act as lead counsel or co-counsel in complex proceedings and coordinate multi-jurisdictional teams in disputes involving parallel arbitration proceedings and ordinary court litigation in several countries.

The practice’s professionals are regularly appointed as arbitrators – both as sole arbitrators and as members of arbitral tribunals – by parties and international arbitral institutions, and frequently act as counsel or mediators in domestic and international mediation proceedings.

This dual experience as counsel and as arbitrators enables the team to offer clients a particularly effective perspective on the dispute resolution process.

Our professional practice is complemented by a sustained commitment to academic and training activity. The firm’s professionals author articles and contributions on arbitration and mediation, participate as speakers at numerous conferences in Italy and abroad, and are regularly involved in teaching and training programmes. For many years, the Head of the practice, Michelangelo Cicogna, has taught the “Advocacy in International Arbitration” course at Bocconi University in Milan; he also teaches at the ICC Academy and is among the faculty members of the Certificate in International Commercial and Investment Arbitration organised by Roma Tre University and the Italian Arbitration Association (AIA).

The team also carries out pro bono activities. Among its most notable, the arbitration team has served for over twenty years as coach of Bocconi University’s team at the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, and is involved in international training programmes under the auspices of the International Development Law Organization (IDLO).
